Position Available:  Position is open until filled.  This is a full-time, twelve-month, tenure-system faculty appointment.  Rank at the level of Associate or Full Professor of Library Administration with tenure, depending on the qualifications of the candidate selected.  The librarian appointment is permanent, but all current unit head appointments in the University Library are five-year, renewable terms. The successful candidate must meet requirements for tenure at the University of Illinois, which includes expectations for librarianship, research and service.

Duties and Responsibilities:  Reporting to the University Librarian, the Head of the International and Area Studies (IAS) Library will provide leadership for, and supervision, of library services to students, faculty, and other scholars using resources in international and areas studies.  This is an opportunity to lead reshaping international and area studies services to users in a major university research library which is involved in rethinking library services through a “new service model” process (www.library.illinois.edu/nsm/). The vision of the IAS Library is to be University's gateway to the world of information and scholarship about international, global, and area studies which are distinct and complementary scholarly projects. The gateway will connect the knowledge that is crucial to developing global competencies through the study of global concerns and transnational issues as well as the study of distinct nations and regions.

The successful candidate will:
·         Provide leadership for the successful integration of personnel and core activities supporting collections and public services into the new International and Area Studies (IAS) Library;
·         Oversee operations and establish priorities for core services in the IAS Library, including reference service, collection development and management, liaison, outreach, instruction, and support for digital scholarship;
·         Collaborate collegially and cooperatively with other personnel in the IAS Library, other unit heads, the AUL for Services, and the AUL for Collections;
·         Communicate with campus constituent groups such as International and Area Studies Centers, and user communities;
·         Evaluate/coach/mentor personnel;
·         Direct the selection, training, evaluation, and deployment of support staff members and graduate assistants/hourly staff in IAS Library;
·         Prepare regular and on-demand reports for the IAS Library, including but not limited to strategic plans, annual goals, annual reports, and budget proposals and requests;
·         Provide collection development, reference service, and bibliographic instruction for general international areas.  Depending upon departmental needs and qualifications of the successful candidate, duties may also include regional area specialization responsibilities;  
·         Coordinate IAS web site management, digital projects, development and management of additional collections, specific library programs and operations, and participate in other projects and activities;
·         Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  Required:  Experience leading and managing in an academic or research environment , particularly in area studies, social sciences, or humanities; Advanced degree in relevant discipline ; Experience providing information and research services and instruction in an academic or research environment; Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library services and resources; Evidence of research, publication, and service to meet university standards for tenure Preferred: Progressively responsible professional experience in academic or research library setting, with a commitment to user-centered services; ALA-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent; Experience working with international or area studies programs and services; Demonstrated knowledge of relevant trends in digital libraries, the social aspects of information, and scholarly communications; Experience in building and sustaining library collections in all formats; Knowledge of one or more non-English languages; Commitment to mentoring and training ; Evidence of strong team-leadership skills; Demonstrated excellent communications skills; Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all elements of an academically and culturally diverse community; Flexibility and ability to thrive in a complex, changing environment with competing demands

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience, and will include an administrative component for the five-year renewable appointment as unit head.  Rank at the level of Associate or Full Professor of Library Administration with tenure, depending on the qualifications of the candidate selected.  Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, publication, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion.

Position Overview
The post of Manager of the Menzies Precinct is one of five positions responsible for managing the provision of library services within Division of Information under the strategic leadership of the Director of Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian, and the relevant Associate Directors and Divisional Managers. Role statement
PURPOSE STATEMENT:

Within the Menzies Precinct of the University Library, the Precinct Manager is responsible for providing user focused services associated with Library User Services, Scholarly Information Resource Management, and Information Literacy under the strategic leadership of the Director, Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS:
The key accountability areas include Library User Services, Scholarly Information Resource Management, and Information Literacy.

Position Dimension & Relationships:
Reporting to the Director, Scholarly Information Services and University Librarian, the position works under the broad direction of the Associate Director, Planning and Resource Management and the Manager, Library User Services and in close cooperation with similar positions within Scholarly Information Services and the Division of Information, and the wider University community.

Role Statement:
1. Manage the delivery of services within the precinct:
1.1 ensuring optimal availability of services
1.2 maintaining scholarly information resource access and collections, including administration and monitoring
1.3 providing information literacy training
1.4 monitoring facilities and equipment maintenance and upgrades
1.5 participating in the planning, research, development and improvement of existing and new scholarly information resource access arrangements and services and agreed projects, as approved by the Directors of the Division.
2. Supervise the day-to-day activities of the precinct staff engaged in acquiring and organising access to scholarly information resources, developing and delivering information literacy training, and providing information services, and provide guidance and assistance to staff with problem diagnosis and resolution.
3. Provide information support for services including developing and maintaining documentation in relation to scholarly information resources, user guides, training materials and procedures.
4. Cooperate with other staff in Scholarly Information Services and the Division of Information and the wider University community, as required, to plan and deliver coordinated services, collections and information access.
5. Liaise with external suppliers and publishers of scholarly information resources where necessary in support of access to scholarly information resources, collection development and service delivery.
6. Maintain and develop technical knowledge and management skills.
Selection criteria


1. Extensive management experience and proven knowledge of library systems and their technologies in one or more service areas identified in the role statement. Relevant postgraduate qualifications will be highly regarded.

2. Experience and skills relevant to Library user services, Scholarly information resource management or Information literacy.

3. An understanding of and sensitivity to the nature and scope of scholarly information resources centred in the precinct.

4. Experience in the supervision of staff and the ability to provide leadership.

5. Well developed communications skills, both written and oral, including technical writing and delivery of presentations to groups.

6. A commitment to the professional attributes of listening, completing and learning.

7. A demonstrated high level of understanding of equal opportunity principles and a commitment to the application of EO policies in a University context.
